CHAPTERS IN ACTION

The Texas Zeta Chapter at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor had an active year last year.  The chapter is sponsored by Pi Gamma Mu International Board of Trustees Secretary-Treasurer, Janet Adamski.  Adamski is also a Professor in the History and Political Science Department at the university.

The chapter held an election watching party on November 4, 2014 called the “Fantasy Draft Tailgate Party.  Using the school’s library’s technology classroom, the chapter had multiple television stations and websites running simultaneously.  This served as a drop-in location for students, faculty, and staff to come by to see and discuss what was happening with the national and state elections.  More than 100 participants attended the event.  This experience helped to raise political awareness and brought attention to the election.  It also helped to highlight awareness of how electoral outcomes could change individual (typically student) lives.  Past UMHB faculty sponsor and International Pi Gamma Mu Board President, Kay Anderson, gave the welcome talk, highlighting the role and history of the two honor societies. Then, the chapter inducted 27 new members. The ceremony was followed with a cake and punch reception for family and friends of inductees, and all UMHB faculty and administrators were invited to participate as well.

Finally, the chapter’s incoming president Stephanie Keller, and outgoing president, Jonathan Morris, organized an informal, relaxing end-of-year “Celebrating Seniors Picnic”. They invited all of the chapter’s graduating seniors and current members to a picnic held in the main campus Quad. The weather cooperated wonderfully, and the chapter had a beautiful evening for celebrating its graduates and enjoying great company and good food. They had a chance to enjoy the event with family members, especially members’ children, and a dog or two.

This promotion was supported by a general donation from the North Carolina Lambda Chapter at Western Carolina University.
