NATIONAL SERVICE PROJECT

Please join other chapters in the Pi Gamma Mu Service Project!
Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society in Social Sciences is proud to embrace Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion within all national service projects.

As an interdisciplinary social science honor society, students and professors are keenly aware of the myriad of social problems that exist in communities throughout the world, especially the unique problems facing our own individual communities. Considering diversity, equity, and inclusion, chapters interested in participating in this service project should choose an issue or project important to them in their unique social environment, campus setting, and community and create a service project around this initiative.

Speaker SeriesLOCAL PUBLIC SERVICE RADIO BROADCASTING

Gordon Mercer, Past Pi Gamma Mu International President

One of our Pi Gamma Mu Ideals is Service which relates to the many ways we can serve our communities through projects that help others. Public service radio broadcasting is one area that is both a career-builder and an important way to serve your community. For the past 17 years, I have hosted a community service radio broadcast as a volunteer interviewing nonprofits and elected leaders. My background includes professor of political science, past president of Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society, and being a Board Member of Pi Gamma Mu. Recent half-hour broadcasts have included the Macon County Women’s History Trail, the 4-H Club, Habitat for Hounds which builds adequate housing for cats and dogs, our local Gem and Mineral Museum, local colleges, Pi Gamma Mu Students, career service nonprofits, local emergency service agencies, authors, and musicians. Recent interviews with local officials include mayors, county commissioners, state legislators, local town leaders, veteran program coordinators, and senior center agencies.

FALL MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

2022-2023 is off to a great start at Pi Gamma Mu and we wish to thank our Chapter Faculty Sponsors for their volunteerism and support, especially during these challenging times. It is the lifetime membership fees collected by Chapter Faculty Sponsors that allows Pi Gamma Mu to provide services to its members such as scholarships, a professional journal, conventions, and more. The fees also allow the Society to maintain fiscal stability and prepare for a strong future. We thank the Chapter Faculty Sponsors for this important work!

ASSOCIATION OF COLLEGE HONOR SOCIETIES

ACHSPi Gamma Mu is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS), which is the authority on standards and definitions for the honor society movement. ACHS has stepped up efforts to alert the higher education community to the standards of traditional honor societies. In contrast, some new so-called honor societies exist only online and allow self-nomination, accepting fees with no questions asked. If in doubt about an organization, you can check out the ACHS website (www.achshonor.org) for the list of honor societies that are members.
