RECAP OF THE 2017 TRIENNIAL INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION
KANSAS CITY, MO - November 2-4, 2017    "Leadership, Scholarship, Service"

The 2017 Pi Gamma Mu Triennial International Convention was one of the most dynamic to date with a spectacular program including student paper presentations, a new Leadership Development Program including special workshops and a decision-making simulation at the Truman Presidential Library, a Chapter Development Showcase including poster presentations by some of Pi Gamma Mu's most active chapters, a keynote address, a welcome reception, an awards banquet, roundtable and panel discussions, student elections, and more! 

2017 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

After much deliberation on the part of the Pi Gamma Mu Awards Committee, the committee's chairperson, Dr. Clara Small, recommended 12 scholarship winners to the Board of Trustees.  The board awarded the scholarships to the following lifetime members of Pi Gamma Mu:

2017-2020 BOARD OF TRUSTEES ANNOUNCED

Prior to each Triennial International Convention, each chapter is entitled to one vote in the election of international and regional officers of Pi Gamma Mu.  Earlier this year each chapter was mailed an election ballot and chapters choosing to vote returned their ballots to the international office by the deadline.  Election results were announced and the new board was sworn in during the Triennial International Convention which was held in Kansas City, Missouri in November, 2017. 

PI GAMMA MU MOURNS LOSS OF DR. PATRICIA KAY ANDERSON

Dr. Patricia Kay Anderson (Kay) died at the age of 77 on October 3, 2017 in Temple, TX after a brave battle with cancer.  Anderson was the 11th International President of the Pi Gamma Mu Board of Trustees and was inducted into the Pi Gamma Mu Hall of Fame in 2011. 

Members of New York Tau Chapter See Lifelong Dream Realized

Pace University Students and their Professors, Dr. Matthew Bolton and Dr. Emily Welty, have been working diligently with the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2017.  Welty is the Vice Moderator of the World Council of Churches Commission on International Affairs which is a member of ICAN and Main Representative to the United Nations for the International Peace Research Association.

APPLICATIONS FOR 2018 GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS DUE ON FEB. 15

Each year, Pi Gamma Mu awards 10 or more scholarships to outstanding members. Three scholarships are worth $2000 each, and the remaining scholarships are worth $1000 each. These scholarships are intended for the first or second year of graduate work in the social sciences. If you are interested in applying, you should start putting your information together right away.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

2017-18 is off to a great start at Pi Gamma Mu with the adoption of an updated Constitution and Bylaws and the completion of another great Triennial International Convention with over 90 students, faculty sponsors, and alumni in attendance in Kansas City, MO in November.  Outstanding student research papers were presented, chapters shared their unique stories, and the Society launched its first ever Leadership Development Program.

PI GAMMA MU ADOPTS UPDATED CONSTITUTION AND BYLAWS AT 2017 TRIENNIAL INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION

Following a lengthy development and review process that spanned several years, Pi Gamma Mu adopted an updated Constitution and Bylaws at its 2017 Triennial International Convention in Kansas City, MO in November.  Several face-to-face meetings of the Board of Trustees and dozens of telephone meetings resulted in the new documents that will help guide the Society into the future.  Chapters voted to approve the changes by returning ballots they received in the mail.

2017 CHAPTER HONOR ROLLS

Each year, the Pi Gamma Mu International Board of Trustees recognizes Pi Gamma Mu's most active chapters by placing them on the annual Roll of Distinction (the highest award for chapters) and Roll of Merit.

SUPPORT THE SOCIAL SCIENCES -- MAKE A DONATION TO PI GAMMA MU

Pi Gamma Mu is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit corporation and is able to accept tax-deductible donations.  If you would like to make a donation to our organization in honor / memory of a professor, sponsor, loved one or friend, or to support our scholarship program, you are encouraged to do so.  Pi Gamma Mu gives scholarships to students going into a graduate program in social science each year, and much more.

2017 NATIONAL SERVICE PROJECT

Delegates in attendance at the 2017 Pi Gamma Mu Triennial International Convention in Kansas City donated dozens of paperback books and toothbrushes to an area Veterans hospital while visiting the city for the convention.  Allison G. S. Knox, Pi Gamma Mu Board of Trustees Chancellor for the Southeast Region, organized the project and delivered the donated items to the hospital.

ACHS MEMBERSHIP PROTECTS THE LEGITIMACY OF HONOR SOCIETIES

Pi Gamma Mu is one of 69 members of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS), which is the authority on standards and definitions for the honor society movement. ACHS has stepped up efforts to alert the higher education community to the standards of traditional honor societies. In contrast, some new so-called honor societies exist only online and allow self-nomination, accepting fees with no questions asked. If in doubt about an organization, you can check out the ACHS website (www.achsnatl.org) for the list of honor societies that are members.
