Every three years Pi Gamma Mu has an international convention with students and faculty coming together in a city somewhere in the USA. This year it will be held in Charleston, South Carolina, that beautiful southern city of hospitality and charm. Whatever your social science discipline... history, political science, psychology, sociology, social work, human services, economics... there is something to learn in Charleston.

TRIENNIAL CONVENTION AND OPPORTUNITY FROM THE PRESIDENT'S VANTAGE

Larry HeckThe Triennial Convention provides a highly significant event in the "life" of Pi Gamma Mu, marking both the end of a three-year cycle and the beginning of a new one. At this unique juncture, the Triennial offers multiple opportunities for Pi Gamma Mu members. Having had the great fortune of attending every Triennial since the first at Tampa/St Petersburg in 1987, I want to offer for your consideration some of the opportunities for both students and faculty members.

CHAPTER DEVELOPMENT SHOWCASE – SUBMIT A POSTER!

What has your chapter been up to? Pi Gamma Mu members have traditionally been very active on college campuses and we bet this year has been no exception. We would love to know what activities you have been involved in with your chapter. There is no better way to share that information than to create a poster for the Triennial PGM Convention in Charleston, South Carolina. On Saturday morning, October 18th, 2014 students will have the chance to display their posters and tell everyone about the exciting happenings on their campus.

STUDENT MEMBERS CAN RUN FOR OFFICE!

ElectionPi Gamma Mu invites student members to run for office! At each triennial international convention, the student members elect two students to serve on the international Board of Trustees for the new triennial (three-year) period. Both student trustees then attend the annual board meetings during that triennium and participate actively in governing Pi Gamma Mu.

Board membership is a sign of respect and accomplishment, particularly if it happens when one is still a student. But it is certainly a significant career milestone at any age.

SHADOW PRESIDENT UPDATE

Dr. Matthew AndersonThe "Shadow President" was conceptualized for the 2008 triennial--aptly named "A Political Party." Elected by the student delegates, the assignment for the "Shadow President" was to "propose policy ideas and second-guess the initiatives of President Barack Obama" in an occasional column (January 2009 Newsletter). Eric Knutson served as the first "Shadow President." During the 2011 triennial, student delegates elected Dr. Matthew Anderson to continue the assignment of the "Shadow President." The opinions expressed in this article are those of the author and may not reflect those of Pi Gamma Mu or its members.

ACHS MEMBERSHIP PROTECTS THE LEGITIMACY OF HONOR SOCIETIES

Honor SocietyPi Gamma Mu is one of 66 members of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS), which is the authority on standards and definitions for the honor society movement. ACHS has stepped up efforts to alert the higher education community to the standards of traditional honor societies. In contrast, some new so-called honor societies exist online and allow self-nomination, accepting fees with no questions asked. If in doubt about an organization, you can check out the ACHS Web site (www.achshonor.org) for the list of honor societies that are members.
